When Worlds Collide


I have to give a huge shout out to Remedy Barre and Foam Rolling in Oakland’s Temescal District. <<You have to check this place out!


First up, they held a benefit recently for Showing Up for Racial Justice, (SURJ) Bay Area, which regular readers will know is a cause close to my heart. (I volunteer for them often as a photographer). Remedy hosted a donation class and a happy hour in their space and they invited me to hang some of my art pieces on their wall. (The artworks are still up there and still for sale!) There were snacks and drinks and mingling as well as an auction for one of the prints I had donated. At the end of the night, Remedy had raised $869 in funds for the work of SURJ and People of Color Partner Organizations. My print auction raised $200 of that. Yay, us!


Not only are Remedy leading by example in giving back to the community, their services are equally as stellar. For the past six weeks I have had a pain in my right hip that would not go away. Last week I signed up for some Remedy classes to help improve my general fitness and strength, but not really imagining by hip would quickly feel better as a result. On Friday I took the 30:30 class with Tamatha Hauskens. <<Amazing teacher by the way; she is empowering, passionate and attentive, you must try one of her classes!


30:30 is described as thirty minutes of our Remedy barre burn followed by a thirty minute, self-massage roll to reinvigorate and restore your body from head to toe. One thing about Tamatha is that she asks her clients, before class, if they are currently experiencing any difficulties or injuries. Last Friday we had one participant with shoulder pain and another (me) with hip flexor problems. So Tamatha directed the rolling part of the class to concentrate particularly on these two issues.


Amazing! I took a barre class again this morning, 3 days later, and the pain in my hip is 90% improved. And I overheard the woman with the shoulder pain saying a similar thing to Tamatha too – her shoulder pain had completely cleared up.
